In the Beginning...
The first American colonists brought only a few pets with them to the New World... most couldn't afford the extra mouth to feed. Those that did have a dog or cat may have been called pets, but they also had to earn their keep by performing useful tasks such as guard duty and killing rats. In the mid-1800s a large middle class emerged. Many more people were now able to afford pets. Since the radio hadn't been invented yet, birds were extremely popular because of their ability to sing. In the 1920s, people discovered reptiles as pets. Prior to that, houses weren't centrally heated, so people couldn't keep reptiles warm enough. Today, pets range from the traditional dogs and cats to exotic reptiles and wild animals... even typical farm animals such as pigs and chickens are now considered acceptable pets.

New Uses for Old Gift Cards
 If you have old gift cards, don't throw them away... share them with your kids. Many young children love to imagine they're shopping just like Mom and Dad.
